Background of the Study (400 words)
Stress is an inherent part of healthcare work, particularly in psychiatric nursing, where nurses are frequently exposed to emotionally demanding situations, including dealing with patients with severe mental health conditions, witnessing patients’ suffering, and managing high workloads. Chronic exposure to stress can lead to burnout, emotional exhaustion, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, which significantly affect job performance, quality of care, and the well-being of healthcare professionals (Olowale & Nwachukwu, 2023).
In psychiatric nursing, stress management is crucial for maintaining nurses’ emotional health and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses are often exposed to traumatic situations, including patient aggression, life-threatening conditions, and emotional strain from providing long-term care for individuals with severe mental illness. Stress management training has been shown to help healthcare workers cope with such challenges by teaching techniques like relaxation, mindfulness, and time management (Suleiman & Bello, 2024). These strategies not only reduce stress levels but also enhance overall job satisfaction, improve patient care, and promote personal well-being (Chinwe & Ibrahim, 2024).
Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State, provides specialized care to individuals with mental health disorders. The hospital is one of the leading centers for psychiatric treatment in the region, and its psychiatric nursing staff is regularly exposed to stressful and challenging situations. This study aims to investigate the effects of stress management training on the mental well-being of psychiatric nurses at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta. By evaluating the impact of stress management interventions on nurses’ stress levels and mental health, the study seeks to offer recommendations for enhancing nurses’ well-being and improving patient care outcomes.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Psychiatric nurses are often exposed to significant stressors in their work environment, including dealing with emotionally challenging patients and high workloads. Chronic exposure to stress can negatively affect their mental well-being, leading to burnout, anxiety, and depression, all of which can impair their job performance and the quality of care provided to patients. While stress management techniques have been shown to improve the well-being of healthcare professionals in other settings, there is limited research on the effectiveness of such interventions specifically for psychiatric nurses in Nigeria.
At Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, nurses face a range of stressors unique to psychiatric care, including working with patients in acute crisis situations and managing challenging behaviors. These stressors often lead to negative emotional and mental health outcomes for the nurses, potentially affecting their job performance and quality of care. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the impact of stress management training on psychiatric nurses’ mental well-being and to identify effective interventions that can help alleviate stress and improve job satisfaction.
This study will examine the effects of stress management training on the mental health of psychiatric nurses at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, providing valuable insights into strategies that can enhance nurses’ emotional resilience and improve overall care delivery.
